“Faces of Feeling”
Ho incontrato per la prima volta a Roma, nel 2023, nel corso di un’interessante mostra collettiva, le opere di Ellen Essen. Quella fu anche la prima volta che incontrai l’artista, un momento indimenticabile perché ne rimasi travolto dal suo straordinario entusiasmo, una passione per la bellezza e per l’arte autentica.
Ellen Essen, pittrice di estrazione tedesca, offre allo spettatore più attento, un linguaggio in cui la figura umana è interpretata attraverso ritratti che hanno lo scopo di svelare la profondità delle emozioni dei personaggi.
L’insieme delle opere che possiamo apprezzare solo attraverso una mostra personale, mette in risalto una gradevole uniformità cromatica ed un velo di affascinante malinconia che traspare dagli sguardi che caratterizzano ogni opera. Uno stile, un segno pittorico che delinea una sensibilità davvero spiccata verso tutto ciò che possiamo ammirare negli abissi dell’anima di ognuno di noi. Ellen Essen ama osservare e riflettere sul senso della vita specchiandosi idealmente nei ritratti che esegue perché ogni opera in realtà altro non è che l’autoritratto della sua anima sensibile.
A Roma, nella elegante Galleria Medina, Ellen espone una serie di opere significativamente, ognuna delle quali racconta una storia, un pensiero, un messaggio e una serie di emozioni molto forti che caratterizzano la nascita di tutti i suoi dipinti. La poesia che traspare dall’atmosfera malinconica che ritroviamo in molte opere di Ellen appartiene in realtà ad una iconografia storica che ci consente di ripercorrere, volendo, anche alcune tappe tra le più belle della storia dell’arte moderna e contemporanea. E, non certo per caso, i primi riferimenti che mi vengono in mente giungono proprio da quelle zone del centro-nordeuropeo dal quale proviene anche Ellen. Ripenso a “Melancholia”, capolavoro del 1911 del pittore norvegese Edvard Munch e alle atmosfere romantiche di uno dei più grandi artisti tedeschi della storia dell’arte, Caspar David Friedrich. Protagonisti di stagioni espressive molto interessanti ed affascinanti nella loro particolare atmosfera poetica. Così come lo scrittore tedesco, Hermann Hesse, che pose la sua idea di malinconia dentro l’anima di ognuno di noi, come scrisse in una sua celebre poesia dal titolo “An die Melancholie”.
Le opere di Ellen Essen, dunque, grazie alla straordinaria intensità emotiva, alla tensione espressiva e alla capacità di suscitare riflessioni molto profonde, si identifica attraverso uno stile che merita i palcoscenici internazionali, affinché il suo alfabeto creativo possa esprimersi, e soprattutto confrontarsi, con un pubblico sempre più ampio.

I met for the first time in Rome, in 2023, during an interesting group exhibition, the works of Ellen Essen.That was also the first time I met the artist, an unforgettable moment because I was overwhelmed by his extraordinary enthusiasm, a passion for beauty and for authentic art.
Ellen Essen, a German painter, offers the most attentive viewer a language in which the human figure is interpreted through portraits that aim to reveal the depth of the emotions of the characters.
The set of works that we can appreciate only through a personal exhibition, highlights a pleasant chromatic uniformity and a veil of fascinating melancholy that shines through the looks that characterize each work. A style, a pictorial sign that outlines a truly marked sensitivity towards all that we can admire in the depths of the soul of each of us. Ellen Essen loves to observe and reflect on the meaning of life, reflecting herself ideally in the portraits she performs because every work in reality is nothing more than the self-portrait of her sensitive soul.
In Rome, in the elegant Galleria Medina, Ellen exhibits a series of particularly significant works, each of which tells a story, a thought, a message and a series of very strong emotions that characterize the birth of all her paintings. The poetry that shines through the melancholy atmosphere1 that we find in many of Ellen’s works actually belongs to a historical iconography that allows us to retrace, if we want, even some of the most beautiful stages in the history of modern and contemporary art. And, not by chance, the first references that come to mind come from those areas of central-northern Europe from which Ellen also comes. I think back to “Melancholia”, a 1911 masterpiece by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch2 and the romantic atmosphere of one of the greatest German artists in the history of art, Caspar David Friedrich. Protagonists of very interesting and fascinating expressive seasons in their particular poetic atmosphere. As well as the German writer, Hermann Hesse4, who put his idea of melancholy inside the soul of each of us, as he wrote in his famous poem entitled “An die Melancholie”.
The artworks of Ellen Essen, therefore, thanks to the extraordinary emotional intensity, the expressive tension and the ability to provoke very deep reflections, is identified through a style that deserves the international stages, so that its creative alphabet can express itself, and above all confront itself, with an ever wider audience.
